DRM receivers

The Morphy Richards DAB/DRM/FM receiver is available from
www.morphyrichards.co.uk
at 199GBP (special offer) but this receiver has been available in Germany for some time and there it is priced as 199Euro (around 135GBP). Despite the VAT rate being higher in Germany (19%, up from 16%) compared to 17.5% in the UK this radio is cheaper to buy in Germany than in the company’s home market. It is possible to buy this receiver cheaper in the UK but only as a ‘grey import’ complete with European mains plug.
In Germany this radio has come in for criticism regarding its DRM performance. However much of the criticism is unfounded as a review was published but the reviewer was using an early prototype and the RadioScape module has since been improved (although comments regarding the lack of a socket for an external aerial is fully justified IMO).
Roberts Radio have not started to manufacture DRM receivers because there are no UK stations using the DRM system on medium wave, and as they only manufacture for the UK, there is not enough demand.
The BBC does broadcasts DRM to Europe on 1296 kHz from Orfordness and there is a 12 month trial DRM broadcast by the BBC of Radio Devon (Plymouth area) on 855 kHz but no radio station has committed itself to broadcasting DRM.
Note that Morphy Richards and Roberts Radio are owned by the same company.

The Sangean receiver is ‘coming soon’.
