The Woofferton site (formerly run by the BBC but now owned and operated by VT Communications) is located about 50 miles (70 km) west of Birmingham (central England) and has started broadcasting DRM, this includes transmitting Deutsche Welle. Perhaps Woofferton is best known as one of the principle transmitter sites to broadcast Voice of America (VoA) to eastern Europe. This site also transmits BBC World Service and the local BBC radio station ‘Radio Hereford and Worcester’ on AM 1548 kHz.

 

 

Woofferton has bought 3 short-wave transmitters from a Croatian company called RIZ.

 

The first transmitter ‘Sender 96’ is operational and work has started on the other two 250 kW transmitters designated ‘Sender 94’ and ‘Sender 92’. Same designation as the Marconi BD272 transmitters (installed in the early 1960’s) that these new RIZ transmitters replace.

 

 

For some reason the BBC has always referred to their short-wave transmitters as Sender (German for transmitter).
